hi, i’m amr. customer match is how a b2b team puts its own crm list to work in google ads: upload customers or leads, then target or exclude them. the list doesn’t stay active forever, and two other details in google’s help page are easy to miss.
what google ads help says
- “Customer Match memberships expire after 540 days.” to keep a list eligible, the page says you must add or update “at least 100 members” within that window
- “Customer Match lists won’t be used if you’re using manual bidding strategies”
- matching covers customers from your uploaded file who are Google users
- for users in the European Economic Area, the page says you need to work with your partner so that the required consent signals are passed to google
540 days is about 18 months, which is my arithmetic, not google’s. for a b2b team with a sales cycle of three to six months, that is long enough to forget about the list and short enough that it will quietly age out if nobody refreshes it.
what to check this week
- open the audience manager in google ads, and note the date each customer match list was last updated
- set a recurring refresh from your crm, such as hubspot, so new customers and leads flow in without a manual export
- check which bidding strategy each campaign using the list runs on. per google, the list isn’t used with manual bidding
- if you advertise to people in the european economic area, confirm with whoever uploads the data that consent signals are being passed
where this stops applying
the page doesn’t state a minimum list size or how long matching takes, so this post makes no claim about either. it also links out to a separate customer match policy that i haven’t summarized here. if you don’t upload any first-party lists, nothing above applies to you yet, and the better question is which list would be worth starting with.
start scaling — if your crm list never makes it into google ads, or made it in once and stopped, connecting the two is usually a small project with a lasting payoff. let’s connect.
