hi, i’m amr. if an seo report of yours still lists “faq rich results” as a win, the line is out of date. google’s own documentation page records the end of the feature, and it is short enough to read in a minute.
what google says, in its own words
- an entry dated september 14, 2023 says the faq feature is “only shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites”
- an entry dated may 8 announces “Deprecating the FAQ rich result feature” and says “This feature will no longer appear in Google Search starting May 7, 2026”
- an entry dated june 15 reads “Removing documentation for the FAQ rich result feature” and states that “The FAQ rich result feature is no longer shown in Google Search results”
my reading, not google’s wording: that is two stages. first the display was limited to a narrow set of sites, then it ended for everyone.
what to check this week
- search your reports and proposals for “faq rich results” or “faq schema” as a deliverable, and remove it as a promised outcome
- if you tracked faq impressions or clicks as a kpi, mark the metric as retired so nobody reads a flat line as a problem
- keep question-and-answer content on the page if it helps buyers. that is a content decision, not a markup decision
- google also says ai overviews need no special files or markup, which i covered in an earlier post. so don’t swap the faq promise for another markup promise
where this stops applying
the page i read doesn’t say whether existing faq markup should be removed, and it makes no claim about rankings, so this post makes neither. i haven’t tested what happens to a site that keeps or deletes the markup. treat that as an open question, not a rule.
start scaling — if your seo plan still counts on search features that no longer exist, a short audit will show which promises to retire. let’s connect.
