Google Suggests 30 Conversions Before You Judge Smart Bidding (50 for Target ROAS) — At 10 Leads a Week, That’s 3 to 5 Weeks

Bar chart of weeks needed to reach 30 and 50 conversions at 20, 10 and 5 conversions a week, using illustrative volumes

hi, i’m amr. a common b2b lead-gen mistake: switch to target cpa on monday, see a worse week by friday, switch back. the problem usually isn’t the strategy. it’s the sample size.

what google says about judging smart bidding

google’s help page on smart bidding recommends measuring performance over longer time periods that have at least 30 conversions, and lists 50 conversions for target ROAS. that is guidance for evaluating results, not a stated minimum for the strategy to function. the page also notes that some strategies need a minimum amount of historical conversion data, which varies by campaign type, and points to each strategy’s own article for specifics.

the arithmetic for a low-volume account

b2b accounts rarely produce hundreds of conversions a week. as plain division on illustrative volumes (not benchmarks for any account):

  • 10 conversions a week: 30 conversions takes about 3 weeks, 50 takes 5 weeks
  • 5 conversions a week: 30 takes 6 weeks, 50 takes 10 weeks
  • 20 conversions a week: 30 takes about 1.5 weeks, 50 takes 2.5 weeks

so a one-week verdict on a 10-a-week account rests on about 10 conversions, a third of what google suggests. that’s noise, and it’s how good strategies get cancelled early.

what to do when volume is thin

  • set the evaluation window before you change anything, in conversions rather than days
  • count a conversion that actually predicts revenue. a form fill is a higher-volume signal than a closed deal, but it can reward junk leads, so pair it with a CRM quality check in HubSpot
  • make one change at a time, so that a bad week can be traced to something
  • consolidate campaigns that split a small number of conversions across many budgets

where this stops applying

the 30 and 50 figures are google’s guidance for measuring, and the page i read doesn’t state a learning-period length. high-volume accounts clear the bar in days and can judge faster. if a campaign is clearly broken (spend with zero conversions, a tracking error), waiting for volume is the wrong call. fix the tracking first.

start scaling — if you keep flipping bid strategies before they’ve had a fair test, a conversion-based evaluation plan fixes that. let’s connect.
